I will be speaking about my current work at the Sorbonne on March 31. The conference centers on the “crises of the universal” that have washed over entire segments of the philosophical tradition. I will contend that universality has, if anything, lost some of its aspirational value: the universalisation of access to universal rights, i.e. the universalisation of conditions of access to universality itself, was once an undisputed horizon of emancipation, and should remain so. Am 31. März spreche ich an der Sorbonne über meine gegenwärtige Arbeit. Die Konferenz kreist um die “Krisen des Universellen”, die ganze Segmente der philosophischen Tradition befallen haben. Ich vertrete, dass Universalität zwar an Appellwert eingebüßt hat, doch die Universalisierung der Zugangsbedingung zu universellen Rechten, das heißt auch die Universalisierung der Zugangsbedingungen zur Universalität selbst, war einst ein kaum bestrittener Emanzipationshorizont – und sollte es wieder sein. Ein Programm ist hier zu finden.
Je parlerai de mon travail actuel le 31 mars à la Sorbonne. La conférence se penche sur les “crises de l’universel” qui ont touché des pans entiers de la tradition philosophique. Je soutiendrai que l’universel a, tout au moins, perdu une part de sa valeur d’appel. L’universalisation des conditions d’accès aux droits universels, c’est à dire l’universalisation des conditions d’accès à l’universel lui-même, était jadis un horizon d’émancipation à peine contesté – et devrait l’être à nouveau. Kill Lists
The blog of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities Essen (Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen) has just published a short piece I wrote on the polemical tradition in literature. The article more specifically focuses on list-making and its social uses. While Émile Zola’s “J’accuse…!”, published in 1898, turned away from the grandiose abstractions of the Third Republic (“freedom”, “liberté“, “justice”, “rational debate”, etc.) and named names instead, Theodore Kaczynski imitated the formal aspects of philological commentary – its orderly lists, its footnotes, its fastidiousness. Both uses of list-making remain prevalent modes of address in the contemporary public sphere. Find the article here.

I recently published an essay on “populism” as a political signifier. This essay argues that the conceptual framing of “populism” does not account for its social uses and that it hence lacks consistency as a descriptor. In order to contain and criticize the regressive political phenomena that have marred democratic societies in recent years, scholarly discourse should develop a better conceptual apparatus and avoid the conflation of progressive and regressive political movements. This essay was published in an issue of American Studies edited by Cedric Essi, Heike Paul, and Boris Vormann. The entire issue is worth reading, as it provides a good overview of positions on the current state of liberal democracies, including contributions from Linda Trinh Võ, Saskia Sassen, Donald Pease, Richard Sennett, and Siri Hustvedt, among many others.

Florian Zappe and I recently edited a Special Issue of the European Journal of American Studies, entitled “Contagion and Conviction: Rumor and Gossip in American Culture.” This collection includes essays by Liam Kennedy, Samuel McCormick, and Katrin Horn, among others. My own contribution, entitled “Is All Discourse Official? On the Poetics of Gifting and Gossiping,” jointly discusses Marcel Mauss’ The Gift (1925) as an incipient theory of literature and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath (1939) as an incipient theory of gifting.

In Arbeit - Bewegung - Geschichte: Zeitschrift für historische Studien ist vor einigen Tagen mein Aufsatz »Armut als Kapital. Eine Kritik an Didier Eribon, Édouard Louis und Geoffroy de Lagasnerie« erschienen. Universality in Splinters
My translation of chapter IV of Jean-Claude Milner’s L’universel en éclats [Universality in Splinters] has just been published in the Fall 2019 issue of Critical Inquiry. The chapter is titled “The University as a Crowd” [“L’université comme foule”] and discusses the accumulative logic of academic knowledge, the numerical growth of the bourgeoisie, and the kind of universality the university gives access to. Meine englische Übersetzung des vierten Kapitels von Jean-Claude Milners L’universel en éclats [Universalität in Splittern] wurde kürzlich von Critical Inquiry veröffentlicht. Das Kapitel heißt “Die Universität als Masse” [“L’université comme foule”] (die Übersetzung von foule als Masse richtet sich hier nach Freuds eigener Übersetzung von Gustave Le Bons Psychologie des foules als Massenpsychologie) und handelt von der akkumulativen Logik des universitären Wissens, vom numerischen Wachstum der bürgerlichen Klasse und von der Art Universalität, zu der die Universität Zugang verschafft. La Lumière, la Vie, la Lettre et le Pain
One of my essays has just been published by Classiques Garnier in a collection edited by Christophe Ippolito. The title might be translated into English as: "Light, Life, Letter, and Loaf: From the Eucharist to the Discovery of Hunger." This essay makes an argument against Hans Blumenberg's theory of metaphoric language and outlines a theory of literal language, that is, a language that eschews the hermeneutic games of philologists, scholars and masters. I discuss the progressive literalization of "bread" since the late 17th century and propose several readings of Aristotle, Charles Sanders Peirce, Friedrich Schlegel, Jonathan Swift, Henry Mayhew, and George Orwell, as well as Sébastien Faure's classic Anarchist Encyclopedia, published between 1925 and 1934.
Un essai intitulé "La Lumière, la Vie, la Lettre et le Pain: De l'Euchariste à la Découverte de la Faim" vient de paraître dans l'ouvrage collectif La Littérature et la Vie, dirigé par Christophe Ippolito chez Classiques Garnier. Cet essai propose une théorie du langage littéral appuyée sur des lectures d'Aristote, Charles Sanders Peirce, Friedrich Schlegel, Jonathan Swift, Henry Mayhew et George Orwell, ainsi que de l'Encyclopédie Anarchiste publiée par Sébastien Faure entre 1925 et 1934. J'y montre comment ces auteurs se sont servis de l'idée de "pain" pour développer un langage non-métaphorique et mettre en place les conditions d'énonciation d'un langage soustrait aux jeux interprétatifs des philologues, des doctes et des maîtres.
Einer meiner Aufsätze wurde vor Kurzem von Christophe Ippolito bei Classiques Garnier veröffentlicht. Der Titel ließe sich auf Deutsch übersetzen als: "Licht, Leben, Buchstaben und Brot: Von der Eucharistie zur Entdeckung des Hungers." Der Aufsatz argumentiert gegen Hans Blumenbergs Metaphorologie und schlägt eine Theorie der Buchstäblichkeit vor, genauer einer Sprache, die sich den hermeneutischen Spielen gelehrter Herrscher entzieht. Ich umreiße dabei die progressive Literalisierung des "Brots" ab dem späten 17. Jahrhundert und mache einige Lektüren von Aristoteles, Charles Sanders Peirce, Friedrich Schlegel, Jonathan Swift, Henry Mayhew und George Orwell, sowie von Sébastien Faures klassischer Anarchistischer Enzyklopädie, die zwischen 1925 und 1934 erschien.
